Joel 2:18-3:21 (New International Version)

The LORD's Answer  18 Then the LORD will be jealous for his land
       and take pity on his people.

 19 The LORD will reply [a] to them:
       "I am sending you grain, new wine and oil,
       enough to satisfy you fully;
       never again will I make you
       an object of scorn to the nations.

 20 "I will drive the northern army far from you,
       pushing it into a parched and barren land,
       with its front columns going into the eastern sea [b]
       and those in the rear into the western sea. [c]
       And its stench will go up;
       its smell will rise."
       Surely he has done great things. [d]

 21 Be not afraid, O land;
       be glad and rejoice.
       Surely the LORD has done great things.

 22 Be not afraid, O wild animals,
       for the open pastures are becoming green.
       The trees are bearing their fruit;
       the fig tree and the vine yield their riches.

 23 Be glad, O people of Zion,
       rejoice in the LORD your God,
       for he has given you
       the autumn rains in righteousness. [e]
       He sends you abundant showers,
       both autumn and spring rains, as before.

 24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain;
       the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.

 25 "I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten—
       the great locust and the young locust,
       the other locusts and the locust swarm [f]—
       my great army that I sent among you.

 26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,
       and you will praise the name of the LORD your God,
       who has worked wonders for you;
       never again will my people be shamed.

 27 Then you will know that I am in Israel,
       that I am the LORD your God,
       and that there is no other;
       never again will my people be shamed. The Day of the LORD  28 "And afterward,
       I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
       Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
       your old men will dream dreams,
       your young men will see visions.

 29 Even on my servants, both men and women,
       I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

 30 I will show wonders in the heavens
       and on the earth,
       blood and fire and billows of smoke.

 31 The sun will be turned to darkness
       and the moon to blood
       before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

 32 And everyone who calls
       on the name of the LORD will be saved;
       for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
       there will be deliverance,
       as the LORD has said,
       among the survivors
       whom the LORD calls. Joel 3 The Nations Judged  1 "In those days and at that time,
       when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,

 2 I will gather all nations
       and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. [g]
       There I will enter into judgment against them
       concerning my inheritance, my people Israel,
       for they scattered my people among the nations
       and divided up my land.

 3 They cast lots for my people
       and traded boys for prostitutes;
       they sold girls for wine
       that they might drink.

 4 "Now what have you against me, O Tyre and Sidon and all you regions of Philistia? Are you repaying me for something I have done? If you are paying me back, I will swiftly and speedily return on your own heads what you have done. 5 For you took my silver and my gold and carried off my finest treasures to your temples. 6 You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, that you might send them far from their homeland.

 7 "See, I am going to rouse them out of the places to which you sold them, and I will return on your own heads what you have done. 8 I will sell your sons and daughters to the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans, a nation far away." The LORD has spoken.

 9 Proclaim this among the nations:
       Prepare for war!
       Rouse the warriors!
       Let all the fighting men draw near and attack.

 10 Beat your plowshares into swords
       and your pruning hooks into spears.
       Let the weakling say,
       "I am strong!"

 11 Come quickly, all you nations from every side,
       and assemble there.
       Bring down your warriors, O LORD!

 12 "Let the nations be roused;
       let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
       for there I will sit
       to judge all the nations on every side.

 13 Swing the sickle,
       for the harvest is ripe.
       Come, trample the grapes,
       for the winepress is full
       and the vats overflow—
       so great is their wickedness!"

 14 Multitudes, multitudes
       in the valley of decision!
       For the day of the LORD is near
       in the valley of decision.

 15 The sun and moon will be darkened,
       and the stars no longer shine.

 16 The LORD will roar from Zion
       and thunder from Jerusalem;
       the earth and the sky will tremble.
       But the LORD will be a refuge for his people,
       a stronghold for the people of Israel. Blessings for God's People  17 "Then you will know that I, the LORD your God,
       dwell in Zion, my holy hill.
       Jerusalem will be holy;
       never again will foreigners invade her.

 18 "In that day the mountains will drip new wine,
       and the hills will flow with milk;
       all the ravines of Judah will run with water.
       A fountain will flow out of the LORD's house
       and will water the valley of acacias. [h]

 19 But Egypt will be desolate,
       Edom a desert waste,
       because of violence done to the people of Judah,
       in whose land they shed innocent blood.

 20 Judah will be inhabited forever
       and Jerusalem through all generations.

 21 Their bloodguilt, which I have not pardoned,
       I will pardon."
       The LORD dwells in Zion!

Joel 1-2:17 (New International Version)

Joel 1

 1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel son of Pethuel. An Invasion of Locusts  2 Hear this, you elders;
       listen, all who live in the land.
       Has anything like this ever happened in your days
       or in the days of your forefathers?

 3 Tell it to your children,
       and let your children tell it to their children,
       and their children to the next generation.

 4 What the locust swarm has left
       the great locusts have eaten;
       what the great locusts have left
       the young locusts have eaten;
       what the young locusts have left
       other locusts [a] have eaten.

 5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep!
       Wail, all you drinkers of wine;
       wail because of the new wine,
       for it has been snatched from your lips.

 6 A nation has invaded my land,
       powerful and without number;
       it has the teeth of a lion,
       the fangs of a lioness.

 7 It has laid waste my vines
       and ruined my fig trees.
       It has stripped off their bark
       and thrown it away,
       leaving their branches white.

 8 Mourn like a virgin [b] in sackcloth
       grieving for the husband [c] of her youth.

 9 Grain offerings and drink offerings
       are cut off from the house of the LORD.
       The priests are in mourning,
       those who minister before the LORD.

 10 The fields are ruined,
       the ground is dried up [d] ;
       the grain is destroyed,
       the new wine is dried up,
       the oil fails.

 11 Despair, you farmers,
       wail, you vine growers;
       grieve for the wheat and the barley,
       because the harvest of the field is destroyed.

 12 The vine is dried up
       and the fig tree is withered;
       the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree—
       all the trees of the field—are dried up.
       Surely the joy of mankind
       is withered away. A Call to Repentance  13 Put on sackcloth, O priests, and mourn;
       wail, you who minister before the altar.
       Come, spend the night in sackcloth,
       you who minister before my God;
       for the grain offerings and drink offerings
       are withheld from the house of your God.

 14 Declare a holy fast;
       call a sacred assembly.
       Summon the elders
       and all who live in the land
       to the house of the LORD your God,
       and cry out to the LORD.

 15 Alas for that day!
       For the day of the LORD is near;
       it will come like destruction from the Almighty. [e]

 16 Has not the food been cut off
       before our very eyes—
       joy and gladness
       from the house of our God?

 17 The seeds are shriveled
       beneath the clods. [f]
       The storehouses are in ruins,
       the granaries have been broken down,
       for the grain has dried up.

 18 How the cattle moan!
       The herds mill about
       because they have no pasture;
       even the flocks of sheep are suffering.

 19 To you, O LORD, I call,
       for fire has devoured the open pastures
       and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.

 20 Even the wild animals pant for you;
       the streams of water have dried up
       and fire has devoured the open pastures. Joel 2 An Army of Locusts  1 Blow the trumpet in Zion;
       sound the alarm on my holy hill.
       Let all who live in the land tremble,
       for the day of the LORD is coming.
       It is close at hand-

 2 a day of darkness and gloom,
       a day of clouds and blackness.
       Like dawn spreading across the mountains
       a large and mighty army comes,
       such as never was of old
       nor ever will be in ages to come.

 3 Before them fire devours,
       behind them a flame blazes.
       Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,
       behind them, a desert waste—
       nothing escapes them.

 4 They have the appearance of horses;
       they gallop along like cavalry.

 5 With a noise like that of chariots
       they leap over the mountaintops,
       like a crackling fire consuming stubble,
       like a mighty army drawn up for battle.

 6 At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;
       every face turns pale.

 7 They charge like warriors;
       they scale walls like soldiers.
       They all march in line,
       not swerving from their course.

 8 They do not jostle each other;
       each marches straight ahead.
       They plunge through defenses
       without breaking ranks.

 9 They rush upon the city;
       they run along the wall.
       They climb into the houses;
       like thieves they enter through the windows.

 10 Before them the earth shakes,
       the sky trembles,
       the sun and moon are darkened,
       and the stars no longer shine.

 11 The LORD thunders
       at the head of his army;
       his forces are beyond number,
       and mighty are those who obey his command.
       The day of the LORD is great;
       it is dreadful.
       Who can endure it? Rend Your Heart  12 "Even now," declares the LORD,
       "return to me with all your heart,
       with fasting and weeping and mourning."

 13 Rend your heart
       and not your garments.
       Return to the LORD your God,
       for he is gracious and compassionate,
       slow to anger and abounding in love,
       and he relents from sending calamity.

 14 Who knows? He may turn and have pity
       and leave behind a blessing—
       grain offerings and drink offerings
       for the LORD your God.

 15 Blow the trumpet in Zion,
       declare a holy fast,
       call a sacred assembly.

 16 Gather the people,
       consecrate the assembly;
       bring together the elders,
       gather the children,
       those nursing at the breast.
       Let the bridegroom leave his room
       and the bride her chamber.

 17 Let the priests, who minister before the LORD,
       weep between the temple porch and the altar.
       Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD.
       Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,
       a byword among the nations.
       Why should they say among the peoples,
       'Where is their God?' "

Jonah 3-4 (New International Version)

Jonah 3 Jonah Goes to Nineveh  1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you."

 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city—a visit required three days. 4 On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned." 5 The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

 6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh:
      "By the decree of the king and his nobles:
       Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish."

 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.Jonah 4 Jonah's Anger at the Lord 's Compassion  1 But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. 2 He prayed to the LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live."

 4 But the LORD replied, "Have you any right to be angry?"

 5 Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the LORD God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine. 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the vine so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, "It would be better for me to die than to live."

 9 But God said to Jonah, "Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?"
      "I do," he said. "I am angry enough to die."

 10 But the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?"

Jonah 1-2 (New International Version)

Jonah 1 Jonah Flees From the LORD  1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me."

 3 But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.

 4 Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.
      But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish."

 7 Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

 8 So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"

 9 He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land."

 10 This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)

 11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"

 12 "Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."

 13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14 Then they cried to the LORD, "O LORD, please do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O LORD, have done as you pleased." 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.

 17 But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.Jonah 2 Jonah's Prayer  1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. 2 He said:
       "In my distress I called to the LORD,
       and he answered me.
       From the depths of the grave [a] I called for help,
       and you listened to my cry.

 3 You hurled me into the deep,
       into the very heart of the seas,
       and the currents swirled about me;
       all your waves and breakers
       swept over me.

 4 I said, 'I have been banished
       from your sight;
       yet I will look again
       toward your holy temple.'

 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, [b]
       the deep surrounded me;
       seaweed was wrapped around my head.

 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
       the earth beneath barred me in forever.
       But you brought my life up from the pit,
       O LORD my God.

 7 "When my life was ebbing away,
       I remembered you, LORD,
       and my prayer rose to you,
       to your holy temple.

 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols
       forfeit the grace that could be theirs.

 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving,
       will sacrifice to you.
       What I have vowed I will make good.
       Salvation comes from the LORD."

 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Matthew 7:13-29 (New International Version)

The Narrow and Wide Gates  13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.A Tree and Its Fruit  15"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

 21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'The Wise and Foolish Builders  24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

 28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Matthew 7:1-12 (New International Version)

Matthew 7Judging Others  1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

 3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

 6"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.Ask, Seek, Knock  7"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

 9"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Matthew 6:29-34 (New International Version)

29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:1-18 (New International Version)

Matthew 6Giving to the Needy  1"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

 2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.Prayer  5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

 9"This, then, is how you should pray:
   " 'Our Father in heaven,
   hallowed be your name,
 10your kingdom come,
   your will be done
      on earth as it is in heaven.
 11Give us today our daily bread.
 12Forgive us our debts,
      as we also have forgiven our debtors.
 13And lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from the evil one.[a]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.Fasting  16"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 5:17-48 (New International Version)

The Fulfillment of the Law  17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.Murder  21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother[b]will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,[c]' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

 23"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

 25"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.[d]Adultery  27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'[e] 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.Divorce  31"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'[f] 32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.Oaths  33"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' 34But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.An Eye for an Eye  38"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'[g] 39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.Love for Enemies  43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor[h] and hate your enemy.' 44But I tell you: Love your enemies[i] and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 5:1-16 (New International Version)

Matthew 5The Beatitudes  1Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them saying:
 3"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
      for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
 4Blessed are those who mourn,
      for they will be comforted.
 5Blessed are the meek,
      for they will inherit the earth.
 6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
      for they will be filled.
 7Blessed are the merciful,
      for they will be shown mercy.
 8Blessed are the pure in heart,
      for they will see God.
 9Blessed are the peacemakers,
      for they will be called sons of God.
 10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
      for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

 11"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.Salt and Light  13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

 14"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Matthew 4 (New International Version)

Matthew 4The Temptation of Jesus  1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

 4Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'[a]"

 5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6"If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written:
   " 'He will command his angels concerning you,
      and they will lift you up in their hands,
   so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'[b]"

 7Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'[c]"

 8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."

 10Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'[d]"

 11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.Jesus Begins to Preach  12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. 13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
 15"Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
      the way to the sea, along the Jordan,
      Galilee of the Gentiles—
 16the people living in darkness
      have seen a great light;
   on those living in the land of the shadow of death
      a light has dawned."[e]

 17From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."The Calling of the First Disciples  18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 20At once they left their nets and followed him.

 21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.Jesus Heals the Sick  23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[f] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.

Matthew 3 (New International Version)

Matthew 3John the Baptist Prepares the Way  1In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea 2and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." 3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
   "A voice of one calling in the desert,
   'Prepare the way for the Lord,
      make straight paths for him.' "[a]

 4John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

 7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

 11"I baptize you with[b] water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."The Baptism of Jesus  13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

 15Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.

 16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

Matthew 2 (New International Version)

Matthew 2The Visit of the Magi  1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east[b] and have come to worship him."

 3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ[c] was to be born. 5"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
 6" 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
      are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
   for out of you will come a ruler
      who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'[d]"

 7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."

 9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east[e] went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.The Escape to Egypt  13When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." 14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."[f]

 16When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
 18"A voice is heard in Ramah,
      weeping and great mourning,
   Rachel weeping for her children
      and refusing to be comforted,
   because they are no more."[g]The Return to Nazareth  19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."

 21So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

Matthew 1 (New International Version)

Matthew 1The Genealogy of Jesus  1A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:
    2Abraham was the father of Isaac,
         Isaac the father of Jacob,
         Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
       3Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
         Perez the father of Hezron,
         Hezron the father of Ram,
       4Ram the father of Amminadab,
         Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
         Nahshon the father of Salmon,
       5Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
         Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
         Obed the father of Jesse,
       6and Jesse the father of King David.
      David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,
    7Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
         Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
         Abijah the father of Asa,
       8Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
         Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
         Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
       9Uzziah the father of Jotham,
         Jotham the father of Ahaz,
         Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
       10Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
         Manasseh the father of Amon,
         Amon the father of Josiah,
       11and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[a] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
    12After the exile to Babylon:
         Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
         Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
       13Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,
         Abiud the father of Eliakim,
         Eliakim the father of Azor,
       14Azor the father of Zadok,
         Zadok the father of Akim,
         Akim the father of Eliud,
       15Eliud the father of Eleazar,
         Eleazar the father of Matthan,
         Matthan the father of Jacob,
       16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

 17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.[b]The Birth of Jesus Christ  18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[c] because he will save his people from their sins."

 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"[d]—which means, "God with us."

 24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Isaiah 66 (New International Version)

Isaiah 66 Judgment and Hope  1 This is what the LORD says:
       "Heaven is my throne,
       and the earth is my footstool.
       Where is the house you will build for me?
       Where will my resting place be?

 2 Has not my hand made all these things,
       and so they came into being?"
       declares the LORD.
       "This is the one I esteem:
       he who is humble and contrite in spirit,
       and trembles at my word.

 3 But whoever sacrifices a bull
       is like one who kills a man,
       and whoever offers a lamb,
       like one who breaks a dog's neck;
       whoever makes a grain offering
       is like one who presents pig's blood,
       and whoever burns memorial incense,
       like one who worships an idol.
       They have chosen their own ways,
       and their souls delight in their abominations;

 4 so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
       and will bring upon them what they dread.
       For when I called, no one answered,
       when I spoke, no one listened.
       They did evil in my sight
       and chose what displeases me."

 5 Hear the word of the LORD,
       you who tremble at his word:
       "Your brothers who hate you,
       and exclude you because of my name, have said,
       'Let the LORD be glorified,
       that we may see your joy!'
       Yet they will be put to shame.

 6 Hear that uproar from the city,
       hear that noise from the temple!
       It is the sound of the LORD
       repaying his enemies all they deserve.

 7 "Before she goes into labor,
       she gives birth;
       before the pains come upon her,
       she delivers a son.

 8 Who has ever heard of such a thing?
       Who has ever seen such things?
       Can a country be born in a day
       or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
       Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
       than she gives birth to her children.

 9 Do I bring to the moment of birth
       and not give delivery?" says the LORD.
       "Do I close up the womb
       when I bring to delivery?" says your God.

 10 "Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her,
       all you who love her;
       rejoice greatly with her,
       all you who mourn over her.

 11 For you will nurse and be satisfied
       at her comforting breasts;
       you will drink deeply
       and delight in her overflowing abundance."

 12 For this is what the LORD says:
       "I will extend peace to her like a river,
       and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream;
       you will nurse and be carried on her arm
       and dandled on her knees.

 13 As a mother comforts her child,
       so will I comfort you;
       and you will be comforted over Jerusalem."

 14 When you see this, your heart will rejoice
       and you will flourish like grass;
       the hand of the LORD will be made known to his servants,
       but his fury will be shown to his foes.

 15 See, the LORD is coming with fire,
       and his chariots are like a whirlwind;
       he will bring down his anger with fury,
       and his rebuke with flames of fire.

 16 For with fire and with his sword
       the LORD will execute judgment upon all men,
       and many will be those slain by the LORD.

 17 "Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following the one in the midst of [a] those who eat the flesh of pigs and rats and other abominable things—they will meet their end together," declares the LORD.

 18 "And I, because of their actions and their imaginations, am about to come [b] and gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see my glory.

 19 "I will set a sign among them, and I will send some of those who survive to the nations—to Tarshish, to the Libyans [c] and Lydians (famous as archers), to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant islands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory. They will proclaim my glory among the nations. 20 And they will bring all your brothers, from all the nations, to my holy mountain in Jerusalem as an offering to the LORD -on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels," says the LORD. "They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the LORD in ceremonially clean vessels. 21 And I will select some of them also to be priests and Levites," says the LORD.

 22 "As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me," declares the LORD, "so will your name and descendants endure. 23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me," says the LORD. 24 "And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind."

Isaiah 65 Judgment and Salvation  1 "I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
       I was found by those who did not seek me.
       To a nation that did not call on my name,
       I said, 'Here am I, here am I.'

 2 All day long I have held out my hands
       to an obstinate people,
       who walk in ways not good,
       pursuing their own imaginations-

 3 a people who continually provoke me
       to my very face,
       offering sacrifices in gardens

 4 who sit among the graves
       and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;
       who eat the flesh of pigs,
       and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat;

 5 who say, 'Keep away; don't come near me,
       for I am too sacred for you!'
       Such people are smoke in my nostrils,
       a fire that keeps burning all day.

 6 "See, it stands written before me:
       I will not keep silent but will pay back in full;
       I will pay it back into their laps-

 7 both your sins and the sins of your fathers,"
       says the LORD.
       "Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains
       and defied me on the hills,
       I will measure into their laps
       the full payment for their former deeds."

 8 This is what the LORD says:
       "As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes
       and men say, 'Don't destroy it,
       there is yet some good in it,'
       so will I do in behalf of my servants;
       I will not destroy them all.

 9 I will bring forth descendants from Jacob,
       and from Judah those who will possess my mountains;
       my chosen people will inherit them,
       and there will my servants live.

 10 Sharon will become a pasture for flocks,
       and the Valley of Achor a resting place for herds,
       for my people who seek me.

 11 "But as for you who forsake the LORD
       and forget my holy mountain,
       who spread a table for Fortune
       and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny,

 12 I will destine you for the sword,
       and you will all bend down for the slaughter;
       for I called but you did not answer,
       I spoke but you did not listen.
       You did evil in my sight
       and chose what displeases me."

 13 Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
       "My servants will eat,
       but you will go hungry;
       my servants will drink,
       but you will go thirsty;
       my servants will rejoice,
       but you will be put to shame.

 14 My servants will sing
       out of the joy of their hearts,
       but you will cry out
       from anguish of heart
       and wail in brokenness of spirit.

 15 You will leave your name
       to my chosen ones as a curse;
       the Sovereign LORD will put you to death,
       but to his servants he will give another name.

 16 Whoever invokes a blessing in the land
       will do so by the God of truth;
       he who takes an oath in the land
       will swear by the God of truth.
       For the past troubles will be forgotten
       and hidden from my eyes. New Heavens and a New Earth  17 "Behold, I will create
       new heavens and a new earth.
       The former things will not be remembered,
       nor will they come to mind.

 18 But be glad and rejoice forever
       in what I will create,
       for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight
       and its people a joy.

 19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem
       and take delight in my people;
       the sound of weeping and of crying
       will be heard in it no more.

 20 "Never again will there be in it
       an infant who lives but a few days,
       or an old man who does not live out his years;
       he who dies at a hundred
       will be thought a mere youth;
       he who fails to reach [a] a hundred
       will be considered accursed.

 21 They will build houses and dwell in them;
       they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

 22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them,
       or plant and others eat.
       For as the days of a tree,
       so will be the days of my people;
       my chosen ones will long enjoy
       the works of their hands.

 23 They will not toil in vain
       or bear children doomed to misfortune;
       for they will be a people blessed by the LORD,
       they and their descendants with them.

 24 Before they call I will answer;
       while they are still speaking I will hear.

 25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together,
       and the lion will eat straw like the ox,
       but dust will be the serpent's food.
       They will neither harm nor destroy
       on all my holy mountain,"
       says the LORD.

Isaiah 63:7-64:12 (New International Version)

Praise and Prayer  7 I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD,
       the deeds for which he is to be praised,
       according to all the LORD has done for us—
       yes, the many good things he has done
       for the house of Israel,
       according to his compassion and many kindnesses.

 8 He said, "Surely they are my people,
       sons who will not be false to me";
       and so he became their Savior.

 9 In all their distress he too was distressed,
       and the angel of his presence saved them.
       In his love and mercy he redeemed them;
       he lifted them up and carried them
       all the days of old.

 10 Yet they rebelled
       and grieved his Holy Spirit.
       So he turned and became their enemy
       and he himself fought against them.

 11 Then his people recalled [a] the days of old,
       the days of Moses and his people—
       where is he who brought them through the sea,
       with the shepherd of his flock?
       Where is he who set
       his Holy Spirit among them,

 12 who sent his glorious arm of power
       to be at Moses' right hand,
       who divided the waters before them,
       to gain for himself everlasting renown,

 13 who led them through the depths?
       Like a horse in open country,
       they did not stumble;

 14 like cattle that go down to the plain,
       they were given rest by the Spirit of the LORD.
       This is how you guided your people
       to make for yourself a glorious name.

 15 Look down from heaven and see
       from your lofty throne, holy and glorious.
       Where are your zeal and your might?
       Your tenderness and compassion are withheld from us.

 16 But you are our Father,
       though Abraham does not know us
       or Israel acknowledge us;
       you, O LORD, are our Father,
       our Redeemer from of old is your name.

 17 Why, O LORD, do you make us wander from your ways
       and harden our hearts so we do not revere you?
       Return for the sake of your servants,
       the tribes that are your inheritance.

 18 For a little while your people possessed your holy place,
       but now our enemies have trampled down your sanctuary.

 19 We are yours from of old;
       but you have not ruled over them,
       they have not been called by your name. [b]Isaiah 64

 1 Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down,
       that the mountains would tremble before you!

 2 As when fire sets twigs ablaze
       and causes water to boil,
       come down to make your name known to your enemies
       and cause the nations to quake before you!

 3 For when you did awesome things that we did not expect,
       you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.

 4 Since ancient times no one has heard,
       no ear has perceived,
       no eye has seen any God besides you,
       who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.

 5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right,
       who remember your ways.
       But when we continued to sin against them,
       you were angry.
       How then can we be saved?

 6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,
       and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
       we all shrivel up like a leaf,
       and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

 7 No one calls on your name
       or strives to lay hold of you;
       for you have hidden your face from us
       and made us waste away because of our sins.

 8 Yet, O LORD, you are our Father.
       We are the clay, you are the potter;
       we are all the work of your hand.

 9 Do not be angry beyond measure, O LORD;
       do not remember our sins forever.
       Oh, look upon us, we pray,
       for we are all your people.

 10 Your sacred cities have become a desert;
       even Zion is a desert, Jerusalem a desolation.

 11 Our holy and glorious temple, where our fathers praised you,
       has been burned with fire,
       and all that we treasured lies in ruins.

 12 After all this, O LORD, will you hold yourself back?
       Will you keep silent and punish us beyond measure?

Isaiah 61-63:6 (New International Version)

Isaiah 61 The Year of the LORD's Favor  1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
       because the LORD has anointed me
       to preach good news to the poor.
       He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
       to proclaim freedom for the captives
       and release from darkness for the prisoners, [a]

 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor
       and the day of vengeance of our God,
       to comfort all who mourn,

 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
       to bestow on them a crown of beauty
       instead of ashes,
       the oil of gladness
       instead of mourning,
       and a garment of praise
       instead of a spirit of despair.
       They will be called oaks of righteousness,
       a planting of the LORD
       for the display of his splendor.

 4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins
       and restore the places long devastated;
       they will renew the ruined cities
       that have been devastated for generations.

 5 Aliens will shepherd your flocks;
       foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.

 6 And you will be called priests of the LORD,
       you will be named ministers of our God.
       You will feed on the wealth of nations,
       and in their riches you will boast.

 7 Instead of their shame
       my people will receive a double portion,
       and instead of disgrace
       they will rejoice in their inheritance;
       and so they will inherit a double portion in their land,
       and everlasting joy will be theirs.

 8 "For I, the LORD, love justice;
       I hate robbery and iniquity.
       In my faithfulness I will reward them
       and make an everlasting covenant with them.

 9 Their descendants will be known among the nations
       and their offspring among the peoples.
       All who see them will acknowledge
       that they are a people the LORD has blessed."

 10 I delight greatly in the LORD;
       my soul rejoices in my God.
       For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
       and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness,
       as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,
       and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

 11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
       and a garden causes seeds to grow,
       so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise
       spring up before all nations.Isaiah 62 Zion's New Name  1 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,
       for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet,
       till her righteousness shines out like the dawn,
       her salvation like a blazing torch.

 2 The nations will see your righteousness,
       and all kings your glory;
       you will be called by a new name
       that the mouth of the LORD will bestow.

 3 You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD's hand,
       a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

 4 No longer will they call you Deserted,
       or name your land Desolate.
       But you will be called Hephzibah, [b]
       and your land Beulah [c] ;
       for the LORD will take delight in you,
       and your land will be married.

 5 As a young man marries a maiden,
       so will your sons [d] marry you;
       as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,
       so will your God rejoice over you.

 6 I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem;
       they will never be silent day or night.
       You who call on the LORD,
       give yourselves no rest,

 7 and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem
       and makes her the praise of the earth.

 8 The LORD has sworn by his right hand
       and by his mighty arm:
       "Never again will I give your grain
       as food for your enemies,
       and never again will foreigners drink the new wine
       for which you have toiled;

 9 but those who harvest it will eat it
       and praise the LORD,
       and those who gather the grapes will drink it
       in the courts of my sanctuary."

 10 Pass through, pass through the gates!
       Prepare the way for the people.
       Build up, build up the highway!
       Remove the stones.
       Raise a banner for the nations.

 11 The LORD has made proclamation
       to the ends of the earth:
       "Say to the Daughter of Zion,
       'See, your Savior comes!
       See, his reward is with him,
       and his recompense accompanies him.' "

 12 They will be called the Holy People,
       the Redeemed of the LORD;
       and you will be called Sought After,
       the City No Longer Deserted.Isaiah 63 God's Day of Vengeance and Redemption  1 Who is this coming from Edom,
       from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson?
       Who is this, robed in splendor,
       striding forward in the greatness of his strength?
       "It is I, speaking in righteousness,
       mighty to save."

 2 Why are your garments red,
       like those of one treading the winepress?

 3 "I have trodden the winepress alone;
       from the nations no one was with me.
       I trampled them in my anger
       and trod them down in my wrath;
       their blood spattered my garments,
       and I stained all my clothing.

 4 For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
       and the year of my redemption has come.

 5 I looked, but there was no one to help,
       I was appalled that no one gave support;
       so my own arm worked salvation for me,
       and my own wrath sustained me.

 6 I trampled the nations in my anger;
       in my wrath I made them drunk
       and poured their blood on the ground."

Isaiah 60 (New International Version)

Isaiah 60 The Glory of Zion  1 "Arise, shine, for your light has come,
       and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

 2 See, darkness covers the earth
       and thick darkness is over the peoples,
       but the LORD rises upon you
       and his glory appears over you.

 3 Nations will come to your light,
       and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

 4 "Lift up your eyes and look about you:
       All assemble and come to you;
       your sons come from afar,
       and your daughters are carried on the arm.

 5 Then you will look and be radiant,
       your heart will throb and swell with joy;
       the wealth on the seas will be brought to you,
       to you the riches of the nations will come.

 6 Herds of camels will cover your land,
       young camels of Midian and Ephah.
       And all from Sheba will come,
       bearing gold and incense
       and proclaiming the praise of the LORD.

 7 All Kedar's flocks will be gathered to you,
       the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
       they will be accepted as offerings on my altar,
       and I will adorn my glorious temple.

 8 "Who are these that fly along like clouds,
       like doves to their nests?

 9 Surely the islands look to me;
       in the lead are the ships of Tarshish, [a]
       bringing your sons from afar,
       with their silver and gold,
       to the honor of the LORD your God,
       the Holy One of Israel,
       for he has endowed you with splendor.

 10 "Foreigners will rebuild your walls,
       and their kings will serve you.
       Though in anger I struck you,
       in favor I will show you compassion.

 11 Your gates will always stand open,
       they will never be shut, day or night,
       so that men may bring you the wealth of the nations—
       their kings led in triumphal procession.

 12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish;
       it will be utterly ruined.

 13 "The glory of Lebanon will come to you,
       the pine, the fir and the cypress together,
       to adorn the place of my sanctuary;
       and I will glorify the place of my feet.

 14 The sons of your oppressors will come bowing before you;
       all who despise you will bow down at your feet
       and will call you the City of the LORD,
       Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

 15 "Although you have been forsaken and hated,
       with no one traveling through,
       I will make you the everlasting pride
       and the joy of all generations.

 16 You will drink the milk of nations
       and be nursed at royal breasts.
       Then you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior,
       your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

 17 Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,
       and silver in place of iron.
       Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
       and iron in place of stones.
       I will make peace your governor
       and righteousness your ruler.

 18 No longer will violence be heard in your land,
       nor ruin or destruction within your borders,
       but you will call your walls Salvation
       and your gates Praise.

 19 The sun will no more be your light by day,
       nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
       for the LORD will be your everlasting light,
       and your God will be your glory.

 20 Your sun will never set again,
       and your moon will wane no more;
       the LORD will be your everlasting light,
       and your days of sorrow will end.

 21 Then will all your people be righteous
       and they will possess the land forever.
       They are the shoot I have planted,
       the work of my hands,
       for the display of my splendor.

 22 The least of you will become a thousand,
       the smallest a mighty nation.
       I am the LORD;
       in its time I will do this swiftly."

Isaiah 59 (New International Version)

Isaiah 59 Sin, Confession and Redemption  1 Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save,
       nor his ear too dull to hear.

 2 But your iniquities have separated
       you from your God;
       your sins have hidden his face from you,
       so that he will not hear.

 3 For your hands are stained with blood,
       your fingers with guilt.
       Your lips have spoken lies,
       and your tongue mutters wicked things.

 4 No one calls for justice;
       no one pleads his case with integrity.
       They rely on empty arguments and speak lies;
       they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.

 5 They hatch the eggs of vipers
       and spin a spider's web.
       Whoever eats their eggs will die,
       and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.

 6 Their cobwebs are useless for clothing;
       they cannot cover themselves with what they make.
       Their deeds are evil deeds,
       and acts of violence are in their hands.

 7 Their feet rush into sin;
       they are swift to shed innocent blood.
       Their thoughts are evil thoughts;
       ruin and destruction mark their ways.

 8 The way of peace they do not know;
       there is no justice in their paths.
       They have turned them into crooked roads;
       no one who walks in them will know peace.

 9 So justice is far from us,
       and righteousness does not reach us.
       We look for light, but all is darkness;
       for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.

 10 Like the blind we grope along the wall,
       feeling our way like men without eyes.
       At midday we stumble as if it were twilight;
       among the strong, we are like the dead.

 11 We all growl like bears;
       we moan mournfully like doves.
       We look for justice, but find none;
       for deliverance, but it is far away.

 12 For our offenses are many in your sight,
       and our sins testify against us.
       Our offenses are ever with us,
       and we acknowledge our iniquities:

 13 rebellion and treachery against the LORD,
       turning our backs on our God,
       fomenting oppression and revolt,
       uttering lies our hearts have conceived.

 14 So justice is driven back,
       and righteousness stands at a distance;
       truth has stumbled in the streets,
       honesty cannot enter.

 15 Truth is nowhere to be found,
       and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.
       The LORD looked and was displeased
       that there was no justice.

 16 He saw that there was no one,
       he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;
       so his own arm worked salvation for him,
       and his own righteousness sustained him.

 17 He put on righteousness as his breastplate,
       and the helmet of salvation on his head;
       he put on the garments of vengeance
       and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak.

 18 According to what they have done,
       so will he repay
       wrath to his enemies
       and retribution to his foes;
       he will repay the islands their due.

 19 From the west, men will fear the name of the LORD,
       and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory.
       For he will come like a pent-up flood
       that the breath of the LORD drives along. [a]

 20 "The Redeemer will come to Zion,
       to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,"
       declares the LORD.

 21 "As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and forever," says the LORD.
