Meet the Summer Assistants!

Zachary VonDeylen & Jordan Uhlhorn

Every Summer, our congregation hosts a couple students from Martin Luther College who are studying to be pastors. MLC is where all the pastors in our national church body go for their undergraduate degree. All our vicars have been graduates of MLC. The two guys work with Pastor Schroeder and I to do ministry work in many different ways including helping with soccer camp, canvassing, following up with worship visitors and other things. So you can get to know them, we conducted a quick interview with them. Most interviews cover boring things like "Where are you from?" or "Where did you go to school?" so we're going to ask them what you actually wanted to know about them. Their names are Zachary VonDelyen and Jordan Uhlhorn (although I think they like to be called Zach and J.D.). I don't have a picture of them, so I just took a picture of some hard working guys from Google. :) ~Vicar Schultz

Given the choice between UGA and Georgia Tech, who will you support while you're here?
ZVD: Well I'm not exactly sure what UGA stands for, so I'll support Georgia Tech. Are they the ones with the big red G?
JU: Georgia Tech I suppose - I remember cheering on Jarrett Jack back in the day and basketball is very important to me so they get my vote.
What toppings do you like on your pizza?
ZVD: Anything goes except for olives. I avoid olives like the plague.
JU: Pepperoni, Pineapple, Mushrooms, Green Peppers, Jalapenos, just not all at the same time!
Do you sleep on your side, back, or front?
ZVD: I usually start on my side, but I always have trouble falling asleep on my side so I eventually switch to my back.
JU: Without fail, I insist on trying out every side each night and then end up sleeping on my back.
Do you drink coffee?
ZVD: I am capable of drinking the black stuff, but I don't drink it often at all. When I do drink it, it's just to have something different.
JU: Nope, and with any luck I will never succumb to its evils. Smells nice though.
Of the two of you, who is more addicted to their smartphone?
ZVD: Definitely me. JD only checks his phone twice a day so it's impossible to get a hold of him. If you need to contact us I'm your guy!
JU: Definitely Zach. I play one game, don't have my phone on me 24/7, and rarely have anyone to text.
You wake up one morning and there is a snake on your kitchen floor. What do you do next?
ZVD: I check my phone to see what kind of snake it is and decide how much I should panic after I find out what kind it is.
JU: Rassle with it 'Zona style or... Scream and dance around like a little chicken, That was my Mom's suggestion for an answer.
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being preschooler), how messy is the other person in this interview?
ZVD: Although JD would be able to conquer a preschooler in a battle of wits, I'm afraid he would lose in a battle of tidiness. Messy Score = 10.5
JU: I'll say 3 in hopes that Zach has mercy on me, but I fully understand that I'm about to be blasted, there's really no escaping it.
What's your idea of a good Friday night?
ZVD: Just to sit down, have a beer, and play board games with friends.
JU: Music for starters. I enjoy a variety, John Legend, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Hozier, Justin Timberlake. Then social interaction perhaps? Friends are good.
Who is your celebrity doppelganger?
ZVD: I've never been told I look like anyone, maybe you can figure it out for me?
JU: Maybe Larry Bird. Probably Owen Wilson. Definitely Evgeni Plushenko (Russian figure skater) especially when I had longer hair. You should look him up.
Who is your role model?
ZVD: Prof. [Joel] Fredrich [from Martin Luther College], he might just be the smartest man alive.
JU: My high school basketball coach, Mr. Meyer. He pushed me to give unmatched effort, always showed passion, and made me commit to doing things the right way.
Would you rather listen to Justin Bieber or Nickelback for the rest of your life? Why?
ZVD: Well I know I don't like Bieber, and I've never heard Nickelback so I guess I'll give them a try.
JU: I'll go with JB. At least he has one or two good (read: catchy) songs
What do you know about Jim Jones or David Koresh? (no fair looking them up on the internet)
ZVD: Was Jim Jones like some kind of crazy cult leader or something? David Koresh doesn't ring any bells.
JU: Fairly confident that these are cult leaders? If so, don't ask me how I know that.
What do you look forward to most about living in Georgia?
ZVD: Well I was here 3 years ago for project timothy via Luther Prep, so I'm excited to see all the people I met back then! Sorry if I don't remember all of your names. Names are hard.
JU: Being in a different atmosphere than Phoenix. That goes for weather, pace of life, and the people. This is exciting because I've never been to this part of the nation.
